Tissue engineering is the development and manipulation of laboratory-grown molecules, cells, tissues or organs to replace or support the function of defective or injured body parts. Realizing the vast potential of tissue engineering and other techniques, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute has introduced an innovative M.Sc course in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (TERM). With the explosion in the field of TERM in the last decade, this course becomes an essential wing of study related to Medical Biology and nanomedicine. This course covers cell and tissue biology, stem cell technology, bionanotechnology, drug delivery, engineering methods and design, and recent trends in regenerative medicine. Through this two year training comprising of four semesters the students are extensively trained for tissue engineering: grafts and materials, regenerative medicine: scaffolds and factors that control endogenous tissue formation. Upon completing this course, the postgraduates understand the techniques utilized to design, fabricate, and functionally assess tissue engineering systems. These students can eventually apply their knowledge in the field of regeneration, repair and replacement of damaged and injured tissues.

A Bachelor's degree in any branch of Life Sciences / Technology (Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Agriculture or equivalent) or Health / Medical Sciences (Medicine, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Allied Health Sciences, Veterinary or equivalent) from a recognized Indian or Foreign University. Students with B. Sc. degree in Physical and Chemical Sciences, are also eligible to apply if biology is taken as one of the subjects at +2 level.

Mode of Selection
Candidates for these Courses will be selected based on merit & personal interview.

The first batch had 3 students. Upon completion of the course, two of them joined foreign laboratories with one registering for Ph.D after qualifying in ILETS in Chousan University, South Korea. From the second batch, one has joined as research officer in a well reputed pharmaceutical company in Mumbai. Also the TERM students have published their research works in journals with an impact factor of 3.5. One of their research work was filed for patent under product development. The medical equipment and supply manufacturing industry employed the highest number of biomedical engineers, followed by research and development in the scientific arena.
