Counseling Psychology is the largest specialty area within Psychology. The Society of counseling Psychology describes this field as"a psychological specialty that facilitates personal and interpersonal functioning across the lifespan with a focus on emotional, social, vocational, educational, health - related, developmental and organizational concerns." The major role of counseling psychologists involves the practical application of psychological ethics and rules to help a person transform, improve and adjust or manage his situation in a better manner.

Any UG / PG Degree approved by recognized university with preference to candidates who have studied atleast one paper related to Psychology.

Counseling Psychology
programme offered in the Chettinad Academy for Research and Education (CARE) is a specialised innovative course at PG level to influence teaching, research and academic excellence in the specific area towards societal development. The learning programme applies new methods both within and outside classrooms to acquire hands on experience at inter disciplinary departments such as Psychiatry, community medicine, fertility & reproductive medicine, cardiology and nephrology.

CARE being attached to a Medical College & Hospital set up, our students are provided placement facilities to get hands on experience in counseling persons with physical disorders associated with emotional problems due to chronic renal failure, couples with sexual problems, infertility etc.We use a variety of evidence-based therapeutic strategies and students acquire particular expertise in tailoring these to meet the specific & varying needs of clients.During the 4th semester, extensive training is imparted to students to take up dissertation project and involve them in research work related to various pressing community problems. Students are encouraged to develop Tools which will be useful for clinicians & future researchers.

Outcome of the Program:

Two of our PG students (2015-17 batch) did research projects on tool development.

Example 1: Gender Role Assessment Tool:

The tool consists of 48 questions that assess gender roles of individuals on the basis of dimensions such as Equality, Diversity, Social justice, Inclusion and Gender role strain. The tool was tested for reliability and validity. Face validity was established by sociologist, psychologist, feminist and lawyer. Reliability was found to be excellent with a score of 0.998.

Example 2: Short scale version of CHIP (coping health inventory for parents) by McCubbin and McCubbin. (1983).

The original questionnaire consisted of 45 questions that were used to develop intervention strategies and measure the parents' ability to cope with stress resulting for parenting a child with chronic illness. The dimensions were Family integration, Medical situation and Self esteem. The researcher developed a short scale version of the same by using principle component analysis. The number of questions was brought down to 15. The reliability of the questionnaire was established using alpha reliability. The alpha score was found to be 0.96.
