Point Calimere
Sprawling
on 17.26 sq.km surrounded by sea and shore, comprising forests of tidal
swamps, dry evergreen forests and mangroves, this sanctuary is situated
in Nagapattinam district. It is bestowed with populations of varied wild
life such as Chital, Wild boar, Bannet macaque, Black Buck, Flamingoes,
Teals, Gulls, Terns, Plovers, and Stilts. Special attractions are close
encounters with Dolphins and Turtles which often come quite close to the
shore.

Vedanthangal
A grove of
Barringatonia and Acacia nilotica trees in a tank from part of the
sanctuary. In additional dry evergreen scrub and thorn forests can also
be seen. Both these sanctuaries are situated in Kancheepuram district
and sprawling in 30-ha and 61-ha area respectively. Vedanthangal is the
oldest birds sanctuary in the country. The Villagers had documented
their right to protect the winged visitors to this sanctuary. The
migrating birds come from far-off lands like Siberia, Australia,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka for nesting and breeding.
Breeding birds like Cormorants, Egrets, Grey Heron, Open-billed
stork, Darter, Spoonbill, White lbris, Night Herons, Grebes, Grey
Pelican etc visit the Sanctuary. The population of migratory birds
included Garganey Teals, Shovellers, Pintails, Stilts, Sandpipers etc.
Some of the resident birds listed are Coots and Moorhen, Terns. In all
115 species of birds have been recorded in this sanctuary.

Wayanad
Rich in
biodiversity, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is an integral part of the
Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and is contiguous to the Bandipur National
Park in Karnataka on the northeast and the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary
in Tamil Nadu on the southeast.
Comprising dry and moist deciduous
forests in some areas, the sanctuary is home to a number of animals,
including elephant, bison, monkey, panther, jungle cat, tiger, wild dog,
sambar, leopard and bear.
The sanctuary also has a large number of
birds — peacock, owl, babbler, woodpecker, cuckoo and jungle fowl.
There are a number of nearby tourist
places that you can visit while on your tour to the Wayanad Wildlife
Sanctuary. Kalpetta, which is the district headquarters of Wayanad, is
famous for its Jain temples.
The Chembra Peak, about 14 km from
Kalpetta, is an ideal spot for trekking. You can also tour Edakkal
Caves, 12 km from Sultan Bathery. The Glass Temple of Kottamunda, about
22 km from Kalpetta, is another attraction.

Vegetation: Dry and moist deciduous

Mammals: Elephant, tiger, panther,
jungle cat, monkey, bison, deer, bear Elephant occupies prime position;
interstate seasonal migration of elephants is common. The tiger
population is fairly good.
Birds: Peacock, babbler, cuckoo,
owl.
Reptiles: Monitor lizard and a
variety of snakes.
How to reach: Good roads and rail
connectivity to Kozhikode (Calicut), Mysore and Ooty — all within a
110-km radius. Kozhikode is the nearest airport.
Accommodation: Forest rest houses
and lodges are available in the vicinity of the park.

Annamalai
Situated near
Pollachi at a distance of around 90 km, the Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary
forms an interesting excursion from Coimbatore. The sanctuary, situated
at an altitude of 1,400 metres in the Western Ghats, is home to
different kind of animals and birds like elephant, gaur, tiger, panther,
sloth bear, deer, wild bear, wild dog, porcupine, flying squirrel,
jackal, pangolin, civet cat and birds like rocket-tailed drongo,
re-whiskered bulbul, black-headed oriole, tree pie, spotted dove, and
green pigeon. The Amaravathy reservoir in the Annamalai has a large
number of crocodiles. Annamalai also has many places of scenic beauty
such as Karainshola, Anaikunthi shola, grass hills, waterfalls, dams and
reservoirs.

Mudumalai
This
sanctuary is located where the Nilagiri Hills, the offshoot of the
Wetern ghats meet the eastern ghats. The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary
has varied mixture of flat land, undulating parkland, open grassland,
swamp, valleys and nullas. The Mayyar river in this region forms a
series of spectacular cascades on its way 65 kms away from
Udhagamandalam - Mysore highway, this sanctuary could be reached from
Mysore as well.
This 321 sq kms wide sanctuary encompasses a National Park measuring
are of 103 sq kms. The vegetation is varied. The hilly terrain of the
Western Ghats, clothed in dense mixed and moist deciduous forests, make
Mudumalai (the ancient hills) a most attractive wildlife reserve. The
Mysore-Ooty highway runs through the Park, following the course of the
Moyar River, which separates Mudumalai from Bandipur.
The fauna includes Elephant, Gaur, Bonnet, Macaque, Common langur,
Tigers and Leopards, Chital, Dhole Panther, Sloth Bear, Python, Barking
deer, Four-Hourned- Antelope, Otter, Crocodiles (mugger), giant flying
squirrel, Sambhar, Hyena, Wild Dog, Wild Boar, Mouse Deer, Spotted Deer,
Jackal, Hare, Porcupine and Mangoose.
The Birds listed in this sanctuary are peacock-our national bird,
grey jungle fowl, Malabar whistling thrush, large racket-tailed dronge,
the shama, the magpie-robin, spotted babbler, small green barbet, greemn
pigeons, little brown dove, malabar grey hornbill, bulbuls, mynahs etc.
Among birds of prey, eagles, hawks, buzzards, harriers, falcons and king
vulture are predominant, berdies some migratory water birds.

Kalakkadu
Kalakkadu and
Mundanthurai Sancturies are situated in an extensive preserve as "tiger
project Reserve". This Wild life Sanctuary is situated in an area of 233
Sq.km. in Tirunelveli District, including the foothills of western Ghats
and the adjoining area. The flora ranges from forests of tropical wet
ever-green to tropical dry deciduous and thorn forest at down hills.
Lion tailed Macaque, Nilgiri tahr, Sambar, Sloth bear, Gaur, Elephant,
Tiger, Flying Squirrel, Panther, wild dog, Pangoline are some of the
wild life seen in the sanctuary. Besides, a wide range of birds and
reptiles could be seen. Trekking can be done with prior permission from
the Forest (Wildlife) Department. Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel
Wildlife Sanctuary : Located in Virudhunagar District, 45 Kms. off
Virudhunagar Town, this sanctuary has a composition of dry deciduous
forests, moist mixed deciduous forests and grass lands. Grizzled Giant
Squirrels are aplenty. Other interesting species are flying squirrel,
Tree Shrew, Elephant, Lion- tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Tahar, Mouse Deer,
Barking Deer, and many a species of birds. This sanctuary can be visited
all through the year.
